The Italian abbot Alberto Fortiseducated in geology, petrology, mineralogy, and palaeontology by eminent 18th-century naturalists, performed several extensive explorations in Istria and Dalmatia – albertoo of the former Venetian Republic, now the littoral part of Croatia.

His attention was especially drawn to the inhabitants of the Dalmatian inland, known as the Morlacchi or Mavrovlachi. However, Fortis is the first foreigner to have visited their settlements and he dedicated an important ablerto of his work to them.
