He never focuses overly long on one subject to the point where the photobioography grows weary of it. It is a wonderfully accessible biography of our 16th president, filled with excellent illustrations and photographs, and written so as to inform but not skip over controversial topics, giving each viewpoint its due. It is shocking to read photobiograpny the life of a human that was born in the 19th century not just Abraham.
I was a little disappointed though that for a ‘photobiography’ it doesn’t really have all that many photographs, though granted that in the first half of the 19th Centur As a Newbery Medal winner, the award given for “the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children,” I suppose I am not really the intended audience for frdedman book. The issues surrounding slavery in 19th-century America are not always fully explained in children’s literature.
Freedman reminds us that Lincoln was a man of humble beginnings; he knew poverty through most of his early life.

I don’t know why it’s magical. He knows when to add an explanation and when to keep his sentences short and to the point. I’ve read different biographies written on President Abraham Lincoln before, but this photo-biography was definitely ALOT more enjoyable.

The description of the bullet’s path is not minced, nor are the hopeless efforts of local doctors and the fact that Lincoln is so tall he has to be laid diagonally on the bed.

His Gettysburg address is so short that a photographer who set up as Lincoln took the podium did not have a chance to take a picture. A Photobiography maintains a formal narrative distance from the reader, yet manages to string out a captivating life, up to the point photobiogdaphy I was sobbing at the death I knew from the beginning would end the tale. I’ve read books about this period of history, frewdman, always with so much detail that I found it all pretty muddled by the time I got through. From the moment he saw it in Louisiana, Lincoln had always known that it was immoral and unconstitutional; slavery was was about denying people their inalienable rights that our forefather’s died for and Lincoln, himself, knew the burden of being bound to a master because of the laws that were freedmann on him as an adolescent; if he took on a job and made money, it would go directly to his father, who didn’t appreciate him.
